Women Made of Clay

The oldest known ceramic articles in the world are figurines of women’s bodies made of clay and dated 29,000 – 25,000 BCE. They appear to be fertility symbols, but we cannot know for sure. It is safe to say that women’s bodies and their ability to give birth have been revered for a very long time.

Today, particularly in light of the current population explosion, women’s dignity, wisdom and, yes, beauty are as important and worthy of reverence as is their fertility.

Every stage of life is to be treasured. My images of “older” women, still made of clay, are a timeless homage to the aging goddess.
