“No” Series

Language in art is not unusual. We often see words or parts of printed pages incorporated in paintings and prints. Pictographs are language too, and I thought it would be fun to include them in my art.

For several years I have been photographing the symbolic language on signage that has been appearing increasingly in the US and abroad. I started with all the ones for “NO” – like the circles with the lines through them. But pictographs often communicate words or phrases that can be anything from funny to scary, so I branched out to include all I could find. I’m still at it.

These two prints are the first that I’ve made from my collection. They are all about “NO.”
